Lake Conroe - 2024
Monday - October 14th
My exchange to Holiday Inn Vacations Resort - Piney Shores was supposed to start on Saturday, on October 12th, but we had the Men's Group BBQ on the 13th so I decided
to start it on Sunday after the BBQ. I was too tired to drive the 4.5 hours to Lake Conroe, so we
waited until Monday Morning to drive up.
Ron had leant us some fishing rods, but I had to redo one of the rods some since they were rigged for the gulf fishing instead of lake fishing. I had bought Marilou
a Zebco which is easier for a beginner to cast and use. We bought our first Texas fishing license on Friday. We arrived there a little after noon and went to the
Big Bear gas station/lunch foods/bait shop and bought some Canadian Night Crawlers. That evening we started fishing about an hour or so before sunset. Marilou was
struggling getting the casting down. There were too many waves from the jet ski's and skiing boats that evening so no luck.

Tuesday October 15th
I was still tired from the last two days events so we took it easier today and stayed at the resort. We started by finding their walking trail. It wound through
the pines. At one point we saw a couple fishing near the calmer part of the lake that I was planning to try that evening. His rod was rigged similar to what I did
for Marilou's rod except he wasn't using a bobber. After talking for a while we continued our walk through the pines. Where we exited, we saw a couple trying their
skill on the putt putt course. We returned there after lunch and did the 18 holes. It was an interesting layout.
That evening we returned to that part of the lake to fish. Another couple was setting up to fish when we arrived. Their rod was set up similar to ours but
they were using chicken hearts and gizzards. We fished for a couple of hours. Marilou was having a little trouble with the casting and missed some bites.
I had several bites before I finally landed a sunfish.
We brought our one fish back to the room where I gutted it and Marilou scaled it. We saved it to cook later.
Wednesday - October 16th
Today we headed to the Sam Houston National Forest with the plan to stop at the Cagle Recreation Area to perhaps hike or fish. There was no one at the entrance to
get a better idea of what to do so we went back to Hwy 1375 and parked near the bridge crossing the lake and walked down to the shore to fish. All we did was
drown some worms. The other persons fishing there didn't appear to get any bites either. Marilou was really struggling to learn how to cast and I was spending more
time coaching than fishing. Eventually she got the hang of it but we still weren't getting any bites so we headed back to Holiday Inn for lunch. On the way back we
had to stop at the gas station for something to add to the eggs to make an omelet in the morning.
We rested up and had an earlier dinner to allow for more fishing before darkness set in. I observed several larger black birds on the shore near the boat launch
that I didn't recognize but hoped I could identify from the telephotos I took. They looked like turkey viltures, but without the red comb. I believe they were
black vultures.
The great blue heron was perched on a podium and eventually approached the water but
didn't appear to be fishing so I was concerned on our prospects.
We decided to fish near where I got my catch the evening before, just closer to the main lake. Marilou caught her first and second fish this evening. She kept the
first but the second she released to grow a little bigger. Some ducks were gathered near where we started fishing, but they eventually waded off to the other side. We also
saw some king fishers and a great heron swooping down.
Thursday - October 17th
Fished from 9:30 until 11:30. It was cold and windy. Got some bites, but no fish. Although I did reel in a catfish skeleton.
We changed clothes and went to Mama Juanita's Mexican Restaurant for lunch. I got the El Cantor. It is a stuffed poblano pepper. The stuffing is a soft white cheese
and it was covered with a mixture of yellow and white cheeses. It was good. The meal also included chicken strips and flour tortillas which I brought back for dinner.
From there we went to view the huge Sam Houston Statue. I bought some Texas cookware there.
We had leftovers for dinner then went fishing again. I switched to smaller hooks that seemed to improve our catching. Marilou kept two sun fish.
One was rather small, the other of ok size. I caught two small catfish and a turtle that I returned to the water. We had a very large full moon tonight.
Friday - October 18th
Marilou noticed that we were having better luck fishing at sundown than in the morning so we decided to hit the pool. The inside pool was cool, but tolerable especially
when I did a few laps. We changed and got ready for lunch at Cracker Barrel due to their internet add of Cod filets for a Friday Special.
We played a round of putt putt on the way out. This time we kept score.
The actual Friday special was whitefish instead of cod. It was ok, but not like cod. Marilou got country steak similarly acceptable. They lived up to my memory of
generous portions, but not remarkable taste.
We rested and did an early dinner before walking down to the lake to fish. The sun fish were biting pretty good again. Marilou was able to land three and I landed
two. I also landed a small snapping turtle. I couldn't get the hook out so cut it off as far in the mouth as I could get the pliers. He kept snapping at the pliers.
